The Latest Facebook Image Dimensions

What is the best size for a Facebook post?

Do you need the most updated Facebook image dimensions?

All sizes are valid and up to date as of November 2021. With infographics!

This is the Ultimate Guide! I’ll cover all the Facebook image sizes you could ever need for your Business Page:

  • Posting sizes for Facebook photos, videos, and link shares are all very different.
  • Facebook covers photos and profile pictures.
  • How big are Facebook Stories? What aspect ratio does it have?
  • Facebook Page Ads for desktop and mobile devices.
  • Facebook catalogs.

Near the end of this section, we will also cover:

  • Facebook 20% text rule.
  • Page size on Facebook.
  • Facebook job post image size.
  • Facebook office photo dimensions..

It is very important to optimize the posts on your Facebook Business Page.

So why are people worrying about how big Facebook Page Images are?

Creating highly engaging images for Facebook is no easy task. You work hard to create unique images that help people understand your brand, your products, services, or offers.

So, make sure that your company is professionally finished.

By using the right sizes, you’ll be able to:

  • Optimize photos for Facebook to prevent your high-quality images from becoming pixelated.
  • Avoid cropping important elements such as the head of your client.
  • Communicate your message without words chopped off in the Facebook news feed.

It’s impossible to track these things, because Facebook has different requirements for each of the images that businesses post.

Plus, they update regularly. In the latest update, Facebook has changed the layout of their business pages, and they have changed the size of the images for event response ads, and they have increased the upload size for videos to 4Gb.

And the profile picture is now round, which you won’t find explained correctly elsewhere.

It is good news though that I am always watching the ground for any changes, so this article is always current. I’m also going to publish a brand-new infographic on the Facebook Page Image Dimensions that all social media marketers need.

There is an infographic by techwyse that will help you quickly find the dimensions and image sizes that we recommend for all the available Facebook ads.

Facebook image post size

What is the best size for posting on Facebook?

Facebook recommends that you use a resolution of 1200 x 630 pixels for sharing images or links. However, doing this is not going to help you make the best impression on your photos and graphics.

What is good to know is that Facebook allows you to create flexible posts. You are not locked into a particular size or shape of pixels.

What is the correct square size for Facebook posts?

Square image posted size on Facebook is 1200 x 1200 pixels. This will allow people to have a more visual impact on Facebook, and it is also portable over multiple social networks.

The popular Instagram post size of 1080 x 1080 also works.

Is it allowed for a Facebook post to be a portrait?

A four-sided portrait that is 4:5 works very well on Facebook. It is also my favorite shape on Instagram. Printed at 1200 x 1500 pixels for Facebook, or use the size for Instagram, which is 1080 x 1350.

By yourself, you can even go higher than a portrait! I have noticed that Pinterest pins sized at 2:3 aspect ratio look really awesome on Facebook (see image below). I don’t recommend posting long infographics, because some of them may get cropped or reduced on Facebook.

Facebook photo post with link in caption
You should make a Facebook photo post with the link in the caption, and not just a standard link share.

What aspect ratio is the best one for Facebook?

Facebook image post size can vary in aspect ratio: 1.91:1 (horizontal), 1:1 (square), 4:5 (portrait), 2:3 (tall).

I would suggest you choose the one that best fits your next-favorite social platform.

You should make sure that the horizontal element always works on twitter and linkedin. Square and portrait will work best on Instagram. 2:3 is recommend as the best Pinterest Pin size.

You can learn more here about social media aspect ratio.

Facebook post size in inches

A Facebook post with a resolution of 1200 x 630 will be 16.667 inches by 8.75 if you export at 72 pixels per inch.

A Facebook post that is 640 x 630 pixels big is also 12.5 by 6.5625 inches if you export it at 96 pixels per inch.

Facebook post size in pixels

So, to summarize, these Facebook post pixel dimensions work this way:

  • 1200 x 630 pixels
  • 1200 x 1200 pixels
  • 1200 x 1500 pixels
  • 1200 x 1800 pixels

You are not required to have a 1200 width, but it is recommended.

Minimum Facebook post size

For images with a link on desktop 479 x 246 pixels, and on mobile min width 320 pixels. source

I strongly suggest that you use the 1200 or 1080 pixels as your image width – or something bigger.

Facebook video sizes banner

Facebook video post size

Another type of post that people can post on Facebook is videos. So, it is true that Facebook videos have options.

Below you will find organic videos that are not ads. There are 360 and live videos that are linked to that.

You are allowed to have both horizontal and vertical videos. Square is something you can use, I believe.

There is no set size that you must use for ads. Please refer to the infographic at the end of this article to find out more about video ads.

Video specs (organic and non-ad):

  • The maximum size of the video that you should upload is 1280 x 720 landscape and 720 x 1280 portrait.
  • There is a minimum width of 600 pixels for both landscape and portrait.
  • The aspect ratio of the landscape is 16:9.
  • The aspect ratio of portraits is 9:16.
  • Mobile renders both video types, using the aspect ratio 2:3.
  • Max file size is 4GB.
  • There are certain video formats that are recommended.MP4 and .MOV.
  • The maximum video length is 120 minutes.
  • Video max frames 30fps.

Facebook 360 Video specs

360 videos provide users a complete 360° view by scrolling with a cursor on web, or by touch or turning their device on mobile. It is also often used organically in feeds, so that it is often more widely distributed.

360 video specs:

  • The maximum dimensions are 4096 x 2048 pixels.
  • Minimum width is 600 pixels.
  • 360 aspect ratio is 2:1.
  • Max file size is 1.75GB.
  • Recommended video format is .MP4.
  • The video length must not exceed 40 minutes.
  • Video max frames 60fps.

How can I go live on Facebook horizontally? How can I go live on Facebook landscape mode?

When you go live, you can choose from horizontal or vertical modes, but before you tap the go live button, you must decide what mode you want. Once you are alive, there is nothing that you can change.

Watch this short video to find out more.

Facebook link share size banner

Facebook link share size

For link shares, use images that are at least 1200 x 630 pixels for the best display on high resolution devices. At the very least, you should use images that are 600 x 315 pixels to show your link page posts that have larger images.

Fortunately the Facebook link share size of 1200 x 630 is also the recommended size for Twitter and LinkedIn, so it works great on all 3. You can also post this size on Instagram!

This infographic contains some tips on ensuring that your images meet Facebook’s guidelines.

Because your image is smaller than 600315, you will automatically assign it to be a thumbnail. Sometimes Facebook will randomly select the center of your image if you neglect to upload it to the right dimensions. So that you can lose a small portion of your image.

The minimum image dimension that you are allowed to share is 200 x 200 pixels.

The size of the image file must not exceed 8 MB. source

Facebook cover photo size banner

Facebook covers pictures for business pages.

Businesses using Facebook marketing have at least 3 different cover photo styles they might use (in addition to their Facebook personal profile cover photo).

The sizes of the cover photos on the wall were determined by what Facebook recommends, which are not always perfect and never optimized for use on both desktop and mobile devices.

You will be able to see the cover photo on the Facebook Business Page. It will be 820 pixels wide by 312 pixels tall on computers, and it will be 640 pixels wide by 360 pixels tall on smartphones.

Facebook Group cover photo sizes for desktops are 1640 pixels wide by 856 pixels tall. For smartphones, the photo is cropped to fit on smartphones at 664 pixels tall.

Facebook Event cover photo displays at 1200 pixels wide by 628 pixels tall on computers, with varied croppings on smartphones.

Confused yet?

You can upload a horizontal photo and allow the cropping to fall where it falls. The image below shows a typical 16:9 aspect ratio and how it’ll crop in height on different devices and uses.

Then, I uploaded some Facebook cover photos in 16:9 aspect ratio, showing various croppings for different devices and uses.

If you are going to design something other than a plain photo, I strongly recommend that you use a template. By doing that, you can ensure that all important elements are visible on all devices.

Facebook Page Profile Picture banner

Facebook Page Profile Picture

The picture that we use on your page displays at 170170 pixels on our computers, 128128 pixels on smartphones and 3636 pixels on most feature phones.

I recommend that you upload a file that is larger than 170. Read on, and I will tell you more about it.

Keep in mind that your Page’s profile picture will be cropped to a circular shape virtually everywhere across Facebook.

‘Classic Facebook’ is a rendering of page cover photo and profile picture.

If this happens, it is possible that the corners of your logo are cut off.

Be sure to reduce the square logo size before uploading, so that it looks good if it is cropped to a circle.

Because of this, I made a handy template so you can preview your logo in a circle, and resize it before uploading if needed.

Facebook Stories image size banner

Facebook Stories are now available in the dimensions that are suitable for viewing and the aspect ratios.

Facebook story images will fill the frame of the viewer’s device, although they won’t all have the same pixel size and aspect ratio.

In order to quickly add photos and videos to your Facebook story, you must hold your phone vertically when snapping or filming. No need to worry about a precise size.

When you are planning to make graphics, it is a good idea to have a 9:16 aspect ratio, and 1080 x 1920 pixels is the size that you should choose.

Facebook 20% text rule banner

What is the meaning of the Facebook 20% text rule?

When Facebook removed their 20% rule, it was set for Fall 2020. What is this rule? It states that the text on an advertisement image must not make up more than 20% of the image.

The first to report this was social media expert Matt Navarra on September 22, 2020, as advertisers were being contacted by Facebook directly to inform them of the update. FB said:

We will no longer penalize ads that have very many images and text in auctions and delivery.

screenshot of Matt Navarra tweet about facebook text rule

Facebook no longer rejects ad images on the basis of the text they contain – or throttles their reach, as they previously stated.

What happened to the text overlay tool from Facebook?

Facebook has decided to end its text overlay tool. So, marketers no longer have to worry about fitting text overlays into the grids that they have been given with this tool.

Is it possible for me to still limit the text that I put on Facebook ads?

Facebook has repeatedly noted that people who use Facebook and Instagram prefer ads that include too much text in the main image.

It appears that ads containing less than 20% of text perform better than ones that have more than 20%. Facebook also advises that advertisers “keep your text short, clear and concise in order to communicate your message effectively.”

Many marketers like to add large, eye-catching words like “free,” “sale,” or “limited time offer” to their images. It sounds like a good strategy to me.

However, the team over at SketchDeck say that more text on an ad image actually increases your CPC (cost per click).

After testing 48 Facebook ads to bust 6 marketing myths, they found that no-text ads performed better! Images that had no text overlay performed consistently better, with a 6-7% lower CPC.

chart of images with no text overlay cpc

Facebook has suggested that ad images should not be moved around in the news feed. Obviously, ads that scream SALE look out of place amidst photos of your cousin’s wedding, sister’s kids, and friend’s vacation.

As far as they knew, the only successful text-added ads that they saw had “free” or “50% off” in the headline.

Then, it also appears that as the text size increased, the CPC increased too.

Bottom line? You still need to use text wisely and sparingly, and test to see which makes the best Facebook ads for your audience.

Facebook “Our Story” cover photo size banner

Facebook cover photo of our story (retired) [Retired]

You can expand your business information in the About section. You can buy this one only for 3 years: 2018, 19 and 20.

As early as January 2021, Facebook started to notify people that this section of the site was disappearing.

If you are still using that information on your Page, copy the text into the About section. There are no images or clickable links anywhere on the site, like the stories are.

The info on the many and varied croppings of the “Our Story” cover photo has been kept below for historical reference only.

Facebook “Our Story” cover photo size croppings
Our story on Facebook: photo size croppings on mobile.

On desktop, the preview image that people see when they click through to your “our story” page on Facebook resembles the image that they see fairly well.

The cropping on mobile devices varies greatly from preview to story (see above).

On desktop, 1200 x 445 works well, but on mobile, 1200 x 672 works well (at least, in the context of this story).

The image that we are showing on this website will be cropped – to 1200 x 348.

So, if you would like to get very specific and plan for the different croppings, then you are welcome to right-click on this handy handy dandy template that I made.

Notice that the sizes are estimated to the best of my ability.

facebook notes sizes banner

Facebook Notes 2021

Notes are another missing feature on Facebook. However if you’ve previously published them, you can find your Notes on your Activity tab about 3/4 of the way down.

I’m not sure if you can still edit previously-published Notes, but again am leaving the image size info below for reference.

Notes cover photo

Your cover photo will be the first thing that your followers see when they scroll through your news feed. Make it bold and eye-catching.

The image dimensions for the Notes cover photo are currently 1200px wide and 445px tall. The average height of a person is almost 2.7 times wider than the average height of the person.

facebook notes cover photo example

It’s recommended you use an image that’s at least 1200px wide to allow for the best resolution. Sometimes smaller photos are enlarged to fit the space, but it is possible that grainy or blurry images may result.

The same aspect ratio and cropping rules apply to mobile devices.

Facebook Notes images

You are allowed to add as many photos to your actual post as you like. Inside your note, the photos that you put on the wall should be at least 700 pixels wide.

Facebook recommends you include a caption with each photo to help your readers understand what’s represented in your picture.

The size of your Facebook pages. banner

The size of your Facebook pages.

The image for this section will be placed on a small square to the right of your title and description.

While there is an opportunity to add multiple images, only the last one you add will show! There is no link so that the viewer can click on and see more.

No, there is no relationship whatsoever between the services. It only shows the name of the service, along with its price, description, and duration.

And a small square image. The Facebook Page services image size displays at a measly 138 pixels square on computer browser, or 276 pixels on retina display.

There is no cropping adjustment. What happens is that whatever image size and shape you upload, or the images you choose from the page photos, will be center-cropped to square.

I would suggest cropping your image to fit in a square before adding to your service tab.

Try to make your page post at least 600 or 1200 pixels square. That would be a good page post.

138 or 276 is just too tiny!

Facebook job post image size banner

Facebook job post image size

It should be the image that is used on the social network to post a job. It should be set at 1200 x 628 pixels.

While Facebook has not recommended a size, I tested and found that you can upload any size, and the center portion will be cropped to this 1.91:1 aspect ratio of a link post.

There is no longer any control over cropping, so if you are creating an image for a job post from scratch, you should make it at 1200 x 628.

You will need to crop the image and display it further. The maximum image that you can upload is 1200 x 628. In a center cut, your image will be at least 442 pixels high. You cannot choose which elements you want to show, so make sure to put the important ones in the center of your display, height-wise.

screenshot showing how the job post image is cropped by facebook.

When you start creating a job post, the image that is used as your cover photo will always be that photo. As long as you haven’t made a dedicated job post image, you can use the cover photo if that works, or you can click the trash can icon, which is no longer an x, in the upper right corner and choose whether you want to have no image or upload another image.
